There are many people in the world who can attest to the effectiveness of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). So what is it about NLP that makes it able to cure phobias, break habits, develop confidence and change your internal state in such a short period of time?

To understand how NLP works, we must first know about our subconscious mind. In all of us there is a conscious and subconscious mind. While the conscious mind does all the logical thinking, reasoning and analysis, the subconscious mind controls our emotions, beliefs, habits and creativity.

Whatever is inside your subconscious mind literally dictates your life. This is because our subconscious mind controls our beliefs, fears, habits and emotions " and these are the things that control your actions and thoughts. Your subconscious mind is why you keep on doing something even though you intellectually know you shouldnt.

What goes in to our subconscious mind is not consciously decided by us. Instead, our references, past experiences and interpretations of events have created the beliefs, habits and fears that we have.

Prone to Insomnia? Try These Preventative Steps

If you are prone to insomnia, is it easier to stay awake and keep busy or like in bed waiting for sleep to take you away? Sleeplessness can be discouraging night after night when the problem seems to persist.

Sleep aid medications offer a full night's sleep, but many come with side effects including a groggy wake-up process the following morning. If you do not want to rely on medication to fall asleep, here are some steps you might take to help prevent insomnia and get some much needed rest:

Avoid consuming stimulants : When it's time for bed, nothing should hinder you from getting some sleep. To that end, avoid anything containing products that will raise your heart rate and keep you alert. This includes soda, alcohol, tobacco, and coffee of course. Alcohol is not a stimulant but it does interrupt sleep patterns.

Your bed is only for sleeping or lovemaking : Your body becomes accustomed to your bed as its resting place when the bed is used for sleep or lovemaking. Reading, watching TV or working in bed will teach your body that your bed is not where you sleep, but a place where your mind is active rather than relaxed.

Move more: Exercise works out your muscles and then provides a soothing rest. Cardiovascular activities for at least 30 minutes a day benefits the body for health and sleep. During sleep, the body shuts down in order to repair itself.

Establish a routine: Establishing a routine is important for everyone but especially for those who suffer from sleep disorders. Doing the same quieting activities at each night will teach your body and mind that it is time to unwind. A warm bath or shower before bed can help you to relax.

Be comfortable: Turn your bedroom into the ultimate relaxation spot. The primary thing to pay attention to is your bed. Choose a comfortable mattress with soft sheets and a pillow conducive to sleep. Keep the air in the bedroom fresh with cool air and good ventilation. If your room is not dark enough wear a mask and possibly ear plugs if there are noises around you.

Don't pressure yourself: Relax and let sleep come to you. Your anxiety will only increase if you let everyone know what you are trying to do. Too much pressure is a stressor that prevents sleep from happening. Turn your thoughts to happy memories or anything that is upbeat and relaxes you.

Brain Training - The Wonder of Working Memory

Working memory is the now of rational thought. We can hold in mind just a certain amount of information at one time. If we're at our limit and we try to take in another piece, we forget something. If you've just looked up a phone number, for instance, and turn to dial it as someone asks you what you want for dinner, the number will likely be gone by the time you've answered.

All thought processes require the use of working memory. Whether we're problem solving, absorbing information, planning, synthesizing, or deciding, working memory plays an integral role. But for all of its importance, working memory has a finite and remarkably small upper limit. This limit varies from person to person and differs according to the kind of information being stored, words being more difficult to remember than digits, for example, but most of us can hold in mind just five to seven pieces of information at one time.

The difference between a poor working memory and an excellent working memory then will be just a few items in short term storage, but this difference has a huge impact on academic and workplace performance, and emotional stability. Children and young adults with below-average working memory capacity find it difficult to focus and follow directions. And studies have shown that working memory yields a more accurate prediction of academic success than does a person's intelligence.

In one fascinating and ingeniously simple piece of research, participants were asked to choose between a healthy salad and a piece of cake. Overwhelmingly respondents opted for the healthy salad. But when given the task of remembering a set of words before being asked the question, respondents more often than not chose cake. When we overload our working memory, our emotional responses surface quickly.

With so much riding on this one facet of mental ability, it comes as a relief to discover that we can increase our working memory with just a short course of diligent training. Scientists from the Universities of Michigan and Bern designed a novel working memory training protocol to strengthen visual and aural working memory at the same time. Participant's working memory scores rose by about sixty percent in less than 20 days, and the training also transferred to fluid intelligence (the target of the study) producing a forty percent increase there, too.

Producing such marked changes, requires carefully tailored training. The task must require great focus and dedicated effort in order for the brain to generate new nerve cells; cells that can then reinforce the structures in the brain that control our working memory. Confirming this remarkable process, scientists from the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden recently used PET scans to record the production of new brain cells as a result of working memory training.

Whether you're looking to correct a shortfall or boost your cognitive skills, working memory training can provide wonderful long term benefits. And with the appropriate training program these benefits are available to all. It should be obvious to just about everyone that there are major differences between women and men. But how men and women think and perceive the world around them is the most important difference.

Men are much more logical when it comes to their world-view. They tend to see things in black and white - a very pragmatic outlook. Logic plays a big part in how many men make their decisions, even if they consider themselves "dreamers" or the "creative types."

Women are more emotional. They allow their emotions to guide them along their path in the decision making process. This is not to say girls can't be logical, but that they are more inclined to "go with their gut" when their emotions are telling them to do something.

Indeed - this is how nature intended things to be. If women were ruled by logic, they would have a hard time caring for their children, since women have to be empathetic to their baby's needs.

By the same token, nature intended men to be logical, since this is the best way for men to protect and provide for their families.

Unfortuneately, though these differences serve a purpose, they also make it more difficult for the two sexes to really understand each other.

Because men are logical, they just assume women think the same way they do! After all, everyone always thinks others - no matter how different they may be - perceives the world in the same way they do.

But this just isn't the case. Because men are logical in nature, they will try and force that logic onto the women they like - usually with poor results.

Take for instance, the notion of the "Pity Kiss."

This is one of those things that girls talk about with each other, and guys have no idea exists. And it all stems from the differences between the logic and the emotional.

Let's say a guy is out with a girl, and he is completely misreading the situation. Perhaps the girl is just not into him at all, yet he is oblivious to this fact and goes in for a kiss.

Naturally, the girl will try and politely keep from having to go through with the kiss. When this happens, the guy's logic center will kick in, and he will try to convince the girl to kiss him!

You'll hear lines like:

"Wow, I thought you liked me. I thought you were different from all the other girls, but I guess I was wrong about you."

"Why don't you want to kiss me? Are you just using me? We're such a good fit!"

"This never happens to me. Why did you go out with me if you don't like me?"

Obviously, there's a million of these types of arguments, and usually the guys will keep at it until the girl caves in and kisses him.

But this is actually the WORST thing that could happen!

The guy may think he's won because he got the kiss, but in reality, he's lost, because the woman gave him a "Pity Kiss" just to shut him up and get away from him without coming off as mean. Now, the woman feels like she was guilted into kissing him, and she'll harbor resentment over it.

This is the type of stuff women will talk about at length to their friends, and NEVER bring up to a guy they like.

But it's important for men to know about the things women talk about - because the best way to attract a woman is to UNDERSTAND how they operate.

And they operate on EMOTION.

In order to really connect with a woman, a man has got to learn to appeal to her emotions and not her logic.

You have to understand that if a woman doesn't want to kiss you - even if you are a great guy and would logically make a great match - it's because you haven't made her experience the emotions she needs to feel to actually WANT to kiss you.

It's this reliance on logic and the ignoring of emotion that is the number one reason why so many guys get rejected by girls!

And women will all complain to each other "What's wrong with men? Why don't they understand how to make us happy?"
